National Sorry Day

Australia Day

The National Sorry Day is an unofficial bank holiday. It commemorates the victims of the racists policy by the Australian state and government which led to the “stolen generation”. These were indigenous children who were taken away from their families to grow up without their aboriginal culture and language.

This remembrance, next to the apology by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in 2008, should be one step towards reconciliation.

The Australia Day is the national bank holiday of Australia. It is celebrated on 26th January and commemorates the landing of the first British settlers in Australia in 1788. The aim of a national bank holiday like the Australia Day is to unify a nation and to create identity. However, the Australian Day is quite controversial because the Aborigines call it the “Invasion Day”.

Match the words and the explanations. Fill in the translations.

Post-Reading II

What is your personal opinion?

Can you come up with an alternative idea for a national bank holiday in Australia?

Differenzierung für die leistungsschwächeren Schülerinnen und Schüler: (gleiche Farbe wie die index cards, Schnipsel in Briefumschlägen auf den Tischen)

We only want to celebrate! We don’t really care what the background of the day is!

Don’t you understand that we feel discriminated against by the fact that you celebrate the arrival of those people who were responsible for our long story of suffering?

The day could be a chance to come together and celebrate today’s Australia with all people! It’s a chance to reconcile!

Why can’t we change the day? You say you just want to celebrate! We could do that on any other day of the year!

We have a right to celebrate the beginning of our nation!

The past should not dictate our future. We are all Australians, let’s focus on that and not on what divides us.

To change the day would be a big step towards reconciliation!
