Long division with dad, mom, sister and brother
Dad, mom, sister, brother?!
These four words (in the acronym DMSB) help you remember
the four steps in long division.
- dad = divide
- mom = multiply
- sister = subtract
- brother = bring down
Let's walk through an example together.
65 ÷ 5 = ?
1. Divide: How many times does 5 fit into 6? 1 Time. Write the 1 on the line.
2. Multiply: What does 5 x 1 equal?
Write the solution 5 under the 6.
3. Subtract: What is 6 minus 5?
Draw a line and write the solution 1 underneath.
4. Bring down: Bring down the next number of the dividend. In this case we put the 5 next to the 1, making the number 15.
5. Divide: How many times does 5 fit into 15?
15 ÷ 5 = 3. Write the 3 on the line.
6. Multiply: What does 5 x 3 equal?
Write the solution 15 under the 15.
7. Subtract: 15 - 15 = 0.
