Mahatma Gandhi is one of the most famous and respected leaders in Indian history. He is best known for leading India’s fight for independence from British rule through peaceful and non-violent protest. His life and ideas have influenced people all around the world.

Gandhi was born in 1869 in Porbandar, a small town in western India. As a young man, he went to London to study law and later worked as a lawyer in South Africa. There, he saw how Indians were treated unfairly because of their race and status. This experience changed his life. He began to believe that injustice should be fought — but not with violence.

When Gandhi returned to India, he became the leader of the Indian independence movement. He organized peaceful protests, marches, and campaigns encouraging Indians to stop buying British goods and make their own clothes. One of his most famous actions was the Salt March in 1930, where he and his followers walked 380 kilometers to protest a British tax on salt.

Gandhi’s philosophy of “Ahimsa” (non-violence) and “Satyagraha” (truth and firmness) became powerful tools against injustice. Even when he was arrested or attacked, Gandhi never stopped believing that peace and love were stronger than hate.

His ideas later inspired other world leaders, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. Gandhi was killed in 1948, but his message lives on: “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”
