Vinisha Umashankar

Vinisha Umashankar is a young Indian inventor, environmentalist, and climate activist from Tamil Nadu, India. She became internationally known for her innovative idea of a solar-powered ironing cart, a project that combines technology, sustainability, and social change.

When she was only 14 years old, Vinisha noticed that many ironing vendors in her hometown used coal irons. Every day, they burned charcoal to heat their irons, creating a lot of smoke and carbon emissions. Vinisha realized that this practice not only harmed the environment but also affected the health of the workers. Instead of complaining, she started looking for a solution.

Her idea was to design an ironing cart powered by solar energy. The cart has solar panels on top, which collect sunlight and convert it into electricity. This electricity heats the iron, removing the need for charcoal completely. The cart can also store energy in a battery, so it can be used even on cloudy days or at night.

Vinisha’s invention gained attention across India and around the world. She won several awards for innovation, including recognition from the UN Climate Conference (COP26) in 2021, where she gave a speech in front of global leaders. In her speech, she said that young people should not just hope for change, but create it. Her words inspired many to think about how science and creativity can solve real-world problems.

Vinisha Umashankar is a symbol of the new generation in India – one that believes in sustainability, technology, and action. Her story shows that even teenagers can make a difference when they combine knowledge with passion and responsibility for the planet.
