A long time ago, Wales was known for its coal mines. Many men worked deep underground, and women at home made special sweet snacks called Welsh Cakes. These cakes were often eaten with afternoon tea. Children also took them to school in their lunchboxes.
Welsh cakes are small, round, and sweet. They are cooked on a griddle, not in the oven. They stay fresh for a long time, so the coal miners could keep them in their coat pockets and eat them during the day.
Later, life in Wales changed. There were fewer coal mines, and people got busier with modern jobs. Fewer families made Welsh cakes at home.
But today, Welsh cakes are still very popular. They are soft, sweet, and have a little spice. Many people in Wales love them—and once you try one, you’ll probably love them too!
